In celebration of World Bread Day, we are proud to present the MARKA project, a unique initiative connecting philately with the preservation and promotion of intangible cultural heritage.
At its centre is the first Serbian commemorative postage stamp and First Day Cover (FDC) dedicated exclusively to bread.
(Stamp and FDC details: Serbian Philately)
The release is dedicated to Cipovka, the traditional bread of Vojvodina, officially inscribed on the National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Serbia.
The Bread That “Smiles at the Moon”
Cipovka represents centuries of traditional baking knowledge passed from generation to generation. Its distinctive shape is created by a characteristic cut in the dough which, during baking, opens into a crescent-like form traditionally described as “smiling at the Moon.”
Through the MARKA project, Cipovka becomes more than a traditional loaf: it becomes a cultural symbol carried by a postage stamp to audiences and collectors around the world.
This release celebrates bread as heritage, memory, craftsmanship and identity, while contributing to the international visibility of Serbia’s rich bread culture.
