There are few ovens of this type still in existence. By preserving this one, future generations will be able to see how bakers worked before the age of high technology. The bakehouse was built in 1935 for Mr. H.T. Miller, by Mr. H.M. Gorse a building contractor of McKimmie Street, Palmyra. Initially it had been intended that the verandah should be unobstructed, to allow free access for the delivery carts. The oldest documented mention of a mill at the current museum location dates from 1666. In 1969 the mill was shut down. In 1987 the bakery was shut down. In 1980, Dipl. Ing. Karl Dirnbacher founded the non-profit association “Bread and Mills Teaching Museum in Gloggnitz” and thus laid the foundation stone for the museum. Changes and extensions were made on an ongoing basis. Today the museum has 4 floors of 200 m2 each and more than 300 exhibits. We pass on the old knowledge about milling to the younger generation and sensitize them to social issues relating to bread as a staple food. In the museum, current nutritional issues of the affluent society are raised and compared with corresponding historical changes. The technical development of milling and bakery is shown and the associated change in the operational and corporate structure. The machines in the bakery are powered by a Marshall steam locomotive from England. It was<br />
built in 1903 and it has a power of 25 hp. You can always go to the bakery for, among other things, mill bread, traditional gingerbread and speculoos. And all this baked in the wood oven on stone. We also have gift baskets with baker’s mill beers or our delicacies: thin speculaas, filled speculaas, pain à la greque, gingerbread and pralines.</p>","image_url":"https://breadculture.net/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/Str-23.avif","image_alt":"Bakery Mill / Bakkersmolen"}">

Bakery Mill / Bakkersmolen

Belgium

St. Jaanstraat 238 2910; Essen-wildert

                                        View details

            <button
                type="button"
                class="museums-card__trigger js-museum-open"
                aria-label="Open details for Bakery Museum / Bakkerijmuseum"
                data-museum="{"title":"Bakery Museum / Bakkerijmuseum","country":"Belgium","address":"Worfthoeven 5; 2440 Geel","phone":"+32 472 91 19 22","email":"leo.struyven@gmail.com","website":"https://www.visit-geel.be/bakkerijmuseum","description":"<p>The rustic Bakery Museum is located a few kilometers from Bobbejaanland and close to the De Zegge nature reserve. The origins of the Bakery Museum lie with Walter Plaetinck, a baker’s son and a passionate collector. During his career as a traveling salesman for bakery products, he encountered numerous bakers who were modernizing their workshops and consequently disposing of old equipment. Plaetinck began collecting these objects in the 1970s with the aim of preserving their history for future generations. Through numerous activities, demonstrations and workshops, visitors can get a (litteral!) taste of how bread used to be made back in the day. The museum is located in a restored farmhouse, the ‘Zuidgasthoeve’ and breathes tradition and history. The Bakery Museum is the proud guardian of the baking craft and culture in Flanders. Together, we care for this heritage of the past, present, and future. The museum seeks and connects, is warm and welcoming.
